How hammock workshops work in Nicaragua

Within each hammock workshop, a division of labor is established, based on the specialization of each craftsman. The workshop owner assigns each artisan a specific task to perform at each stage of the production process.

The seamstresses are responsible for weaving the hammock bangs. They do this sitting on a chair outside their home, often in the company of neighboring seamstresses. Weavers are responsible for weaving the body of the hammock on a loom. Although this is traditionally a man's job, some women also take on this task. Finally, the assembler is responsible for putting together the various parts, including the bangs and body of the hammock, as well as the bars, wooden decorations, ropes and rings. These are the three types of workers who make up the workforce of hammock workshops.
